An old friend googled me and found my web-site, and this blog. This is for him.

An English professor wrote the words, "A woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing."

The women wrote: "A woman: without her, man is nothing."

V v old, but .......appropriate.

I am Sam v/s Black

In the celebration of end of mid-sems, I saw many many movies, but the only 2 actually worth watching were "I am Sam" and "Black". Both dealt with similar themes : 'I am Sam' is about the life of a mentally retarded person, and whether he is capable of taking care of his daughter, while 'Black' is about the life of a deaf-dumb girl, and her teacher.

Similar themes, both quite nice. But somehow Sanjay Leela Bhansali seemed like he was trying too hard. The cinematography, the angles, the way Rani walked, the bent head of Amitabh, the snow falling. Every scene seemed calculated to make the tears fall, which they did. Almost every one in the theatre was crying - guys included :).

'I am Sam' on the other hand, didn't try so hard, and hence seemed more believable. It was just a simple story, and if it touched my heart and the tears fell, that was just incidental. I didn't even agree with the basic theme of the movie - I don't really think that a mentally retarted person can be entrusted with a kid, even if the kid is his daughter and he loves her v much and all that jazz. But I could see the love on the screen - I could relate to it.

While 'Black' was good, 'I am Sam' was brilliant. Hindi cinema is moving ahead, but we still have a long way to go.

Questions but no Answers

If I could change places with anyone in ths world, would I? No.
I know this, I accept this. Nobody has a better life than I do, no one has more abilities than I, just because it is me. Each one of us is unique in our abilities and our thoguhts, and our lives........ our lives are all different and yet all the same. We want the same thing - happiness, though we each try our own different ways of getting this happiness.
Then y do I try so hard to convince myself that if others were offered the chance, they "should want" to trade places with me. Y do I feel the need to feel like my life is better to others. It is not. I know it.
But I still try. Effectively that is what it all boils down to. Topping the class, looking good, being friendly, being popular - all ways of saying - See I am better than the others. I forget that it is not the others who I am trying to convince but myself.
And what happens the day that I do realise that I don't have to prove my point any more? What happens to my ambition? Why top? Why workout? Would I still want to change the world if I knew that I wouldn't get the credit for it? Maybe ... Maybe not.

Unfortunately I don't know. Do I want to change the world in the first place? Or is it just my ego wanting to be acknowleged ? I know what being famous is like, and I know for sure that it is not for me. But I do want to know that I could be famous if I wanted to. That the lack of fame is a lack of desire, and not a lack of ability.

If I could do anything right now, would I be doing absolutely the same thing that I am doing right now? NO. Unfortunate but true. I can't really do what I want to, cause it is not practical - not possible. So is this a compromise? Not really. I am enjoying my life the way it is. I have amazing friends, I enjoy my work, I am learning a lot. Shouldn't that be enough ? Do I have the right to have an almost perfect life, and then crib cause it is not actually perfect? Doesnt seem right to me. But then again, the unreasonable man changes the world, doesn't he?

Midsems !

Was missing for quite some time now, thanks to midsems going on.
Well, they r finally over :))
1. Approx Algos went much better than expected - probably cause my expectations were so low :)
2. Compilers went very very bad, and absolute grading is like a knife hanging on my head :(
3. Hypertext mining, and MEMS were both generally bad.

Went home yesterday, had loads of fun, saw TV, ate a LOT, now have lots of food in my room.

Tried my hand at baking a cake, after v long. I used to be decently good at it, but this one turned out to be strictly ok.

Meghanak just managed to reinstall my network card on Linux - I had managed to un-install it, and after almost a month, it is back. Now I can go back to Linux (was using Windows in my room till now, and it was a MAJOR pain).
Thank you Meghana :))

Will watch a movie now.

Expect LOTS of posts in the next few days...... :))

Went for dinner to h-1(hostel-1) canteen a few nights ago, with 3 Maharashtrian friends, X, Y & Z...
After dinner as we were walking back to our lab, the discussion turned to poetry, and X (who is a very close friend) started reciting a beautiful Marathi Poem, to which they all started discussing how rich Marathi literature was. That statement was then refined to how marathi culture was the richest, at which point I interrupted to say that while it may be "rich", it certainly does not mean that the other cultures both in India and abroad are not equally rich. Y said, "Yes, thats true. Other cultures also have great literature and stuff." "But marathi literature is the best - we have so much of it, and even marathi cinema - India was introduced to cinema thank to Dada Phondke (??) "

Now Y is one of the most brilliant people I know, and I really respect him. Which is why I felt so hurt about his attitude. If we brilliant students at IIT start believing in the "my culture/religion/hometown/language is better than yours", what hope do the others have? And such an attitude is exactly why we have wars in the first place.

This is one of the cutest sites I have been to in quite some time.

Bru Cappuccino (Mocha)

Good for hostelites, 6Rs, strong, bitter, and most important - it doesn't have sugar pre-added, so you can control how much of coffee and how much of sweet do you really want... :))

Valentine's Day ... Now

___ji got her digicam today, had major fun taking pics and videos in the hostel of every1 making funny faces .... :))

Then all of us CSE M.Tech.-1 girls went to HN (Hiranandani) - had major fun - eating, taking snaps and eating some more :)))

I had chicken franky + pani puri (gol guppe) + plain crossiant + Rich Dutch Truffle pastry (which was to die for !) and then had "bites" of everyone's icecream. :))
Man, I'm turning into a hog :).

Now, everyone's watching Black....

Some of my friends called me up to wish me Happy Valentine's - it was cho chweet :))

All in all, an amazing fun day. :) - my first "all-girls" Valentine.

Valentine's Day ... Then

In a very nostalgic mood right now....

Remembering all my friends from B.E. ....

First year - Valentine's we had our Mechanics-1 exam and then on 16th, we were supposed to have E. Drawing. 14 of us went to Ahuja's Biryani House in Vashi, and had a blast ...

Second year - Baked chocolate brownies for my friends... they loved it !! Got all dressed up to go out, and then got a call from them - "extra class - we are busy, will c u late in the evening"...

Third Year - Went to TIFR :)) and then Gateway of India - bought myself a skirt... still have it.

Final year - Rangoli (first floor) lunch, with v special ppl again.

Guys (you know who u are) - really missing all of you right now. All my friends, through the years, want to call up each one of you, talk, meet up....

The days gone by, RAIT.......
Was watching our B.E. RAIT CD - all the noise, all the hungama, all the good & bad singing :)
Saree Day, Horizons, B.E. project, and chai at KRESIT, "Bollywood Hollywood", Robotics (Ram Bharose), India-Pak match, ALL the birthday treats, hanging out at ____ & ___'s place doing nothing, food at Cupid's and Kaygees ........ and sooooo much more

What do I say?
Thanks to all of you for always being there...

Especially for all the suport in the Mahabaleshwar trip, the way it ended - I wouldn't have survived it, if it hadnt been for all of you.

You have ben gr8 friends through the years, and this is a thank you for all of it.
Every small thing - stuff that I can't possibly mention :)).......

Thanks to all of you for being such great friends !
and Happy Valentine's day !!

Walked back to my hostel - for the omlette.... only to realize that mess was closed since it was 9.30

Charles - Camilla

All the papers are talking about the wedding - though they seem to be saying that this is not as romantic as the Charles-Diana fairytale wedding..... Somehow, I have to disagree.

Charles and Camilla have been "going around" for so many years, doing things together, living together... and yet, even at the age of 52, after so many years, they want to make it official.
The romance is still alive.

Hope I find someone like that - someone who I am so completely in love with, and who is in love with me, even after so much time......

The perfect Valentine's Day Story.

Finding Neverland

Saw the movie yesterday - thought it was awesome :)
Great camera-work, taut story-line, amazing acting, and a sense of abstractness - a feeling of meaning without a message, that ensured that it was neither an "artsy" movie, nor a "commercial formula-flick".
Went with good company too ....and had major fun.
Later went to Mocha for some panini and coffee (which wasn't so good).
All in all, a fun day.

Changed my glasses from a cool square plastic yellow-black, to a more traditional silver metallic frame. It is a nice change of look as all my friends will agree, but...... I feel like I have lost an integral part of my personality. I have been wearing cool glasses ranging from a biker blue frame to my black frame - the first thing that anyone would notice about my looks "were" my glasses.
Now ofcourse I fit in with the IIT crowd - all my friends seem to have similar frames - not so happy about it - I don't like "blending in" with the crowd.
Anyways, I'm getting loads of compliments about the new pair - so that's a good thing :))....

Quality Control

This speaks a lot about the quality of Japanese products and their quality standards. They're still laughing about this at IBM. Apparently the computer giant decided to have some parts manufactured in Japan as a trial project. In the specifications, they set out that they will accept three defective parts per 10,000 . When the delivery came in there was an accompanying letter. " We, Japanese people , had a hard time understanding North American business practices . But the three defective parts per 10,000 have been separately manufactured and have been included in the consignment. Hope this pleases you . "

Loads of things happening in my life.....

First, got my mom a digi-cam (Olympus 3.2 Megapixels, 3X optical zoom...) from my first TA (teaching assistantship) .... she was quite happy about it.

Met all my friends from RAIT over the week-end - after like 2 months - major fun !!!

Saw page-3 -it was OK - not that gr8 and not bad either.........

Had a surprise quiz on compilers on Tuesday - it went v badly - so am going to get a zero..... :(( ....
Then had an announced quiz on Approximate algorithms on Thursday, which went equally bad, and another zero....

A little freaked now - not used to flunking quizes, leave alone getting zeroes
So trying to study seriously..............

We are doing a project based on an indexing and search engine Lucene.... for our Hypertext course. Right now, I'm just trying to figure out how to run some sample code based on the Lucene classes...
Getting back to work.
